Do It Anyway

I hate that I am a people-pleaser. I really do. I wonder when I will reach my breaking point; or perhaps I already have. If feeling like I should please everyone around me and like it is my responsibility to be the appeaser weren't quite draining enough, on top of it I feel guilty for feeling like I should be ok with these self-fabricated and imposed responsibilities.

For once, I would much enjoy to not have to turn the other cheek; to not have to apologize for something I didn't do, to someone who is upset because they feel entitled to an apology and like it is their prerogative to be easily offended by things that have nothing to do with them. This "loving your enemy" thing is hard...to put it lightly.

I wonder if it is selfish and foolish of me to long for a sincere apology when I have been wronged, for empathy when I make a mistake, or for a simple thank you when I have gone out of my way to show someone how much I care. I am having a hard time finding the energy I need to do all I can to be who I have always been and not care about how others deceivingly portray me to be.

Maybe I just have to Do It Anyway.

Do It Anyway ~ Mother Teresa
People are often unreasonable, illogical, and self-centered;
Forgive them anyway.

If you are kind,
people may accuse you of selfish ulterior motives
;
Be kind anyway.

If you are successful,
you will win some false friends and some true enemies
;
Succeed anyway.

If you are honest and frank,
people may cheat you
;
Be honest and frank anyway.

What you spend years building,
someone could destroy overnight.
Build anyway.

If you find serenity and happiness,
they may be jealous
;
Be happy anyway.

The good you do today,
people will often forget tomorrow
;
Do good anyway.

Give the world the best you have,
and it may never be enough
;
Give the best you've got anyway.

You see, in the final analysis
it is between you and God
;
it was never between you and them anyway.

A Song, A Piece of Paper, and An Answered Prayer

For the past couple of years of offering supplications that don't stray in their context, we have wondered when things were going to change around here. When we found out Kamila was on her way, we were overwhelmed with thoughts such as "How am I going to finish school and care for a baby?" and "Who is going to watch Kami while I am at school and Chip is at work?" and "CAN WE DO THIS?".
At the time, Chip was working part-time and so was I and things just worked. Then a baby was on its way and Chip was offered a full-time position that would provide for our family with what we needed and more than anything, stability. He took the job but nevertheless, it came with sacrifices such as Chip having to work every Sunday, which we obviously were not content about. Kamila came and changed our world, in every good way.

Kamila, you will never know the magnitude of the love we have for you and the impact that you have had on our lives.
We have experienced miracles since your arrival. That is not to say there have not been obstacles and trials, but we have always been given the strength and enlightenment to overcome them.

Today, what seemed like an eternally unanswered prayer was answered. Chip was offered a job with better pay and a schedule that will allow him to be home evenings and weekends. I am thrilled that I will no longer be alone with Kami during sacrament meeting :)

Upon hearing the good news, I took a minute to reflect on how blessed we are and how much I feel the Savior's love for me, for my family. I am not the only one, I am sure, who has had very dark and challenging times in my life. However, I feel like I have been given an innate gift of trusting the Lord to always take care of me and not panic, just trust in Him. I have often wondered why we aren't where we projected to be by now 4 years ago. I still don't know the answer. All I know is that He knows where we want to go, and He will help us get there, in His own time, IF we let him take the wheel.
So, here I am, enveloped in gratitude for witnessing His tender mercies, looking at a white piece of paper with shiny green letters and feeling like the luckiest gal in the world. Anything is possible if you just believe.

P.S.- Ever heard a song and felt like your name should be in the title followed by "Life Story At The Moment"? I have. It may not necessarily resemble my life to a tee, but the gist is right on. I love it! It is my new happy song, ironically.
Mushaboom by Feist

Helping the kids out of their coats
But wait the babies haven't been born oh
Unpacking the bags and setting up
And planting lilacs and buttercups oh

But in the meantime we've got it hard
Second floor living without a yard
It may be years until the day
My dreams will match up with my pay

Old dirt road,
(mushaboom, mushaboom)
knee deep snow
(mushaboom, mushaboom)
Watching the fire as we grow
(mushaboom, mushaboom)
o-o-o-o-old

I got a man to stick it out
And make a home from a rented house oh
And we'll collect the moments one by one
I guess that's how the future's done oh

How many acres, how much light
Tucked in the woods and out of sight
Talk to the neighbours and tip my cap
On a little road barely on the map

Even when the sky looks gray..

and it is awfully cold and gloomy out, moments can be made out of ordinary instances. I am so grateful for this little person...

and for my best friend, who make everything worthwhile when I see moments like this

There are reasons to be grateful all around. Sometimes we just have to want to see them.

He is back!

As I was scrolling through my past entries, I realized that I omitted pictures and details of Ariel's homecoming. We are so happy to have him back. Luckily for me, it is true what they say- pictures are worth more than a thousand words. Here you have them.

A Few Notions

I had a feeling right from the start that this year would bring a lot of change. I guess I expected to experience change in residence, profession, things of that nature. I didn't think that the first major changes in my life for this year would be emotionally intricate. I have been pondering the happenings of last year as well as those of this new year. I have learned that..

life is fragile. After losing 3 loved ones, you start to wonder when the last time you see so-and-so will be. I also am learning the hard way that in some instances of life, you don't get second chances. Do today what you could, but may not be able to, do tomorrow. Make that phone call, say you're sorry, tell someone how much you care, reach out to that person that needs your help. It may be too late tomorrow. I still have dreams about my grandfather that cause so much pain and make me wake up crying. Actually, just thinking for more than 5 seconds about him brings me to tears, like it is happening right now. I miss his sly attempts to persuade me to try a habanero pepper; his camera in his hands, so excited to take yet another picture of his grandchildren talking to Abuelita or holding a trophy during 5th grade Spelling Bee; or his broken-record reply to my inquiry "What are you up to Grandpa? - "Just watchin' the puppets on tv". How I wish I had made that phone call that night and listened to that soft prompting. The next day it was too late.

what a comfort it is to know that families are FOREVER. I am so grateful for temples and sealing covenants.

always say goodbye and make sure that you leave those around you, better off than they were before you found them. This may be the last time you see them.

family is the most important thing in life. They will always love you, no matter what, and do so unconditionally inspite of my many character flaws and weaknesses.

having a brand new car, a new home, the latest fashionable attire, the most popular gadgets- don't make you happy. They may bring happiness, but it is always momentary. True joy is constant and independent of material factors.

actions speak louder than words. Words can be lost in the wind, but actions strike the heart. Say what you mean, and mean what you say.

true, genuine friendships are in truth hard to come by. There will be people who are there when it is convenient for them, who show one face to you and then become someone else when your back is turned. True friends rejoice when you succeed and grieve when you fail. They also make sure that their hand is extended in case you need help getting back up. A true friend is never envious, but encouraging; never accusatory, but understanding; never grudging, but forgiving; never entitled, but hopeful.
Another of my favorite quotes is "Don't feel sorry for the girl with one true friend. Envy her. Feel sorry for the girl with just a thousand acquaintances."

those who gossip about others in your presence will surely gossip about you with others. I really hate gossip. Everyone involved always gets slimy or defamed in one way or another. Stay away from it! Learn to politely change the subject, or better yet, ask them not to keep going. It really is pointless and nothing good ever comes from it. If you gossip about them, and/or if they gossip about you, you are not true friends.

it is perfectly fine to say no when you want to say yes just to be agreeable. It is ok to avoid toxic personalities and circumstances because it is detrimental to your personal health/growth. I don't have to be a people pleaser. One of my favorite quotes by Dr. Seuss says "Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind."

Marilyn Monroe was a smart cookie. I like her more and more each day.
"I believe that everything happens for a reason. People change so that you can learn to let go, things go wrong so that you appreciate them when they're right, you believe lies so you eventually learn to trust no one but yourself, and sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together."

"When it comes down to it, I let them think what they want. If they care enough to bother with what I do, then I'm already better than them."

"This life is what you make it. Not matter what, you're going to mess up sometimes, it's a universal truth. But the good part is you get to decide how you're going to mess it up. Girls will be your friends - they'll act like it anyway. But just remember, some come, some go. The ones that stay with you through everything - they're your true best friends. Don't let go of them. Also remember, sisters make the best friends in the world. As for lovers, well, they'll come and go too. And baby, I hate to say it, most of them - actually pretty much all of them are going to break your heart, but you can't give up because if you give up, you'll never find your soul mate. You'll never find that half who makes you whole and that goes for everything. Just because you fail once, doesn't mean you're gonna fail at everything. Keep trying, hold on, and always, always, always believe in yourself, because if you don't, then who will, sweetie? So keep your head high, keep your chin up, and most importantly, keep smiling, because life's a beautiful thing and there's so much to smile about."
"I don't want to make money, I just want to be wonderful."

"Success makes so many people hate you. I wish it wasn't that way. It would be wonderful to enjoy success without seeing envy in the eyes of those around you."

Phoenix continued...

Wait- there is more! We went to the zoo with Mom, Dad, Londy, and Bean. Kami loved it! We got to feed giraffes, eat lots of popcorn, see a Gila Monster, and go in the monkey den.

We also had the chance to visit GrandDad's new home. I am so grateful for people who tend the elderly with love and respect.
LAst, but not least, we got to meet Elizabeth (hopefully my soon to be sister-in-law). She is simply adorable. Gorgeous on the outside and inside. Writing all of this just makes me a little more desperate to move to Phoenix. I miss you all so much!

Christmas/New Year's

Chip is seriously the best husband ever. He let me go home to Texas for a week prior to Christmas week while he stayed home to work. I love you honey. I always enjoy being home. I only wish that Chip could go with me each time. I slacked on the pictures big time while I was there. My cousin Aime got married and had such a fun reception. Kamila danced the night away (so did I) and finally gave in at about 11pm. We got home at about 2. I can't remember the last time I was up that late.

These are the only pictures I have. Sad for me.
For Christmas, Chip drove down to Phoenix and Kami and I met him there. We had Christmas dinner at Aunt Ginna's followed by the traditional Christmas story play. Kamila wanted nothing to do with it...until the play got going. Then the manger with all of its cozy blankets allured her into thinking she could throw the baby Jesus doll out and take his place. So she did. She laid down, put her thumb in her mouth and let the show go on. Hilarious to say the least.  I don't have pictures to prove it, but I do have a video coming soon.

Christmas day.  We are so blessed to have the families that we do. GrandDad's last words to us before we left were "You know, very few families had the type of Christmas that you did". Truer words could not have been spoken. We are so grateful for our parents, siblings, and their families. We love you all SO much. Christmas would not be the same without you.
